Row 2: 15 feet from screen, 7" riser, 25° viewing angle (SMPTE minimum)

Build a 7-inch platform for the second row. Use 2x8 joists with 3/4" plywood. Carpet the platform to match the room. Consider adding LED step lighting for safety.

Theater Seating FAQ

The riser needs to elevate the back row so viewers can see over the heads of those in front. Typically 7-8 inches for 2 rows, and 12-14 inches (or two 7" risers) for 3 rows. The exact height depends on seat depth and row spacing.

Allow at least 36" between the back of front row seats and the front of back row seats for walking room. For recliners that fully extend, you may need 42-48". Tighter spacing (30") works if back row enters from the sides only.

THX recommends a 36° viewing angle (screen fills 36° of your vision). SMPTE minimum is 30°. Front rows can be up to 40° for an immersive experience. Back rows shouldn't drop below 25° or the screen feels too small. Our calculator checks all rows against these standards.

Yes, bar-height seating (28-30" seat height) is a great alternative to building a riser. You'll need a bar/counter behind the main seating. This works well in multi-purpose rooms and makes the back row feel like a VIP section with drink rails.
